On the run up to Christmas we can be so busy that we forget all about ourselves so here are twelve easy tips to help you look fabulous at Christmas and beyond!

Day 1: Looking Colourful

Wearing colour not only makes you look more visible but helps you to feel cheerful, especially over the Christmas period. Lockdown felt very grey so why not make this year a colourful one.

Why not choose several tops, in a variety of colours for your Christmas 2022 wardrobe which can be worn with the wider more comfortable trousers available this year.

Day 2: Red Lipstick

There’s nothing quite as festive as a red lipstick and it can transform an outfit like no other colour! If you’re new to red, start with a soft one then add a little clear gloss to bring some Christmas glamour. There is a red for everyone but for a brighter red it’s worth discovering if you suit a blue based or orange red as it will be more flattering to your skin tone

Day 3: Accessories

Maybe you’re struggling to find a new outfit for Christmas Day, or the finances won’t stretch that far this year. A sparky necklace or scarf could make that favourite top look much more festive.

Day 4: Hair Cut and Colour

Book your Christmas hair appointment early as the salons will soon be booked up.  If you're thinking of changing your hair colour it’s worth researching the hair colours that will suit your skin tone, as it will save a lot of heart ache and money.  In the past my hair colour has mistakenly been too dark or too blonde which made me appear either a little harsh or washed out.  Why not upload a photo to an app like Redken that will show you whether the colour will suit or not.   Even better have a chat with your hairdresser to ensure that you’ll look gorgeous over Christmas!

Day 5: Gift Vouchers

How often do we receive those Christmas gifts like jewellery and scarves that are just not us?   It’s a shame when our loved ones have spent precious money on gifts that we’ll never wear or use so why not ask for gift vouchers.  This way you’ll be able to buy what you want and feel more gratitude for the gift.  You’ll also have an experience or shopping trip to look forward to in the New Year.

Day 6: Lingerie and Shapewear

It’s amazing the difference that the right lingerie and shapewear will make to an outfit.  Lines look smoother and we appear more up to date with a little lift.  We were in lockdown for several months so it’s worth reviewing your undies as they may have lost their shape or not fit properly anymore.  It’s also possible to choose shapewear with light control which is just smoothing and not uncomfortable.  Websites like Figleaves.com have a large range and buying ourselves some new lingerie for Christmas Day will make us look and feel so much better!

Day 7: Your Style

Before training to be a Stylist I didn’t understand my own style, I didn’t question whether my clothes really suited me.  Sometimes I knew that I didn’t look great but didn’t know why, I’d wear necklines that were too high and skirts that made my waist look bigger.  Now I tell my clients that they should feel good in everything they wear so it’s worth planning your Christmas outfit ahead, especially if it’s new.  Try it on, take a photo and decide if the neckline suits you and whether the style flatters your shape, as you may have been tempted by the many baggy clothes currently in the shops.  Ask yourself do I feel good in this and ideally you will say ‘I love it’!

Day 8: Beauty treatments

As Christmas is approaching quickly and time in running out, it’s worth putting a couple of hours in your diary to do those important beauty treatments.  Maybe it’s too late to book in at a salon or money won’t stretch that far this year but giving yourself a little time out will help make you feel fabulous on Christmas Day.   Decide when you’re going to have a face mask, deep condition your hair and paint your nails so that when you’re rushing about on that special day, you’ll look more groomed and well presented!

Day: 9 Plan your outfits – photos

For the three days over Christmas, it’s good to plan your outfits to ensure that they are clean, still fit and we actually like and feel comfortable in them.  I suggest to clients that that put together their three, try them on and take photos.  This way you’ll remember what you’re going to wear and can decide which accessories and shoes will match.  When you’ve decided on the three outfits, keep them separately during Christmas week then you’ll be all ready to start the festivities on Christmas Eve!

Day 10: Your wardrobe

The time between Christmas and New Year is a great time to go through your wardrobe.  It’s the perfect period to organise and make room for the new.  When decluttering a client’s wardrobe, I first put items into categories, jackets, tops, trousers dresses etc, making it easier to see the items.  It’s useful then to look at each item and decide if you wear it, if it still fits and is in good condition.  Next make three piles on the bed, one for repair and laundering or cleaning, one for selling on and one for recycling.  This not only provides more space but gives a sense of organisation as we enter the New Year!

Day 11: January sales

The January sales are a great time to shop for those larger items that would normally cost hundreds.  Why not use that precious Christmas money or gift vouchers to buy those investment items like a good quality coat, business bag, watch or more expensive pen?  The prices of these items are usually slashed, giving the opportunity to purchase pieces that maybe we couldn’t normally afford.  Better quality items make us look and feel as though we’re worth investing in, especially for work!

Day 12:  Happy Christmas and Keep smiling!

At Christmas when mixing with the family, emotions and expectations can run high, especially this year.  I decided a few years ago just to take a deep breath and keep smiling through.  As Roald Dahl states, in one of my favourite quotes - ‘If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely’.  Also, if you’re caught on camera, you’ll look much better if you’re smiling!
